Feeling It's Time to Leave the U.S.?

Becoming a Good Migrant:

Decolonize Your U.S. Exit Strategy

A 2-day Online Workshop for

Underrepresented U.S. Americans*

November 23 & 24 - Sliding Scale $75 - $250

Learn how to create a considerate and well-planned exit strategy in uncertain times.

Plan. Consider. Budget. Migrate.

*For BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Women, Mixed Couples, and Allies

Let's pause together and consider.

This workshop, given in 2022, came at the request of friends and clients of mine to learn the pros and cons of migrating while addressing the real concerns about our safety in the U.S. and abroad.

Crossing borders and seeking refuge carries responsibility too. We must seek to do less harm while we seek sanctuary from harm.

This workshop is here to help you migrate with respect and consideration for the people you will make communion within new lands.

Workshop Outline:

Session 1: Plan - Your Departure

Making the Decision: Assessing when and where to move.

Preliminary Visits: The importance of exploring your potential new home.

Passport Privilege: Understanding the advantages and limitations of your citizenship.

Session 2: Consider - Cultural Awareness

Cultural Immersion: Learning the language and customs of your chosen destination.

Political Awareness: Understanding local governance and societal norms.

Decolonizing Your Mindset: Approaching migration with respect and humility.

Session 3: Budget – Financial Preparation

Budgeting: Evaluating your lifestyle and financial needs.

Downsizing: Simplifying possessions and commitments.

Essential Services: Planning for healthcare, internet access, and pet relocation.

Session 4: Migrate - Exiting the U.S.

Emotional Resilience: Coping with solastalgia and root shock.

Legal Pathways: Navigating visas, work opportunities, and avoiding gentrification.

Community Building: Connecting with local and expat migrant communities.

Plus Private and Secure Signal Group: Access ongoing Q&A sessions, share reflections, and network with fellow participants.

About Your Facilitator

Ixchel is a former Mestize Vice Mayor of Petaluma, California, who migrated south to Nicaragua in 2016 after the election results. Facing political oppression and an authoritarian regime, they became undocumented during pandemic lockdowns, and were unable to leave for over two years. Now re-matriating and reconnecting with their ancestral roots in Mexico, Ixchel is on the path to becoming a Mexican citizen. In this intimate workshop, they share their story and the invaluable lessons learned from their journey.

Do I Belong Here?

We are holding a brave, inclusive, private, trauma-sensitive space. You belong if you if you are JEDIs, Edgewalkers, BIPOC, Decolonizers, Anti-Racists, Culturemakers, Neuro-emergents, 2Spirits, QueerAF, Trans, Enbies, Revolutionaries, Feminists, and Dreamers. You belong if you are part of the movement to create the POST-Hegemonic Culture (liberating from the cis + heteronormative, imperialist, white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy — h/t bell hooks + Laverne Cox).

Is There a Recording?

Yes, there will be a recording. It will be edited for privacy and available by Wednesday following the workshop.

Are There Scholarships?

For every four paying participants, we offer a full scholarship to one person with limited access to wealth. If you identify as limited access to wealth and are interested in applying for a scholarship, please contact Ixchel directly. Do not apply if you can afford to purchase and have a steady income. If people choose the higher-access to wealth options, there will be more scholarships available. Please note, as a Trans/Nonbinary with limited access to wealth or income, the sales are going to expedite my trip to the U.S. so I can finish name/gender/passport changes prior to 2025 administration change.
